's right. not dead. judging by my twitter feed, many of you are very angry at harry reid tonight for killing the assault weapons ban in the package of legislation that was voted out of the judiciary committee. the judiciary committee's legislation on gun safety includes universal background checks, among other things. an assault weapons ban was also in there. the vote in the committee on the assault weapons ban was straight party line, ten democrats in favor, eight republicans opposed. but unfortunately, the judiciary committee does not reflect the politics of the senate as a whole. the judiciary committee, like some other committees, is a bit more liberal than the full senate. those committees can sometimes pass bills that cannot pass the senate. it is not unusual for the majority leader of the senate, whether he's a republican or a democrat, to slightly rewrite committee past bills before introducing them to the full senate. the majority leaders' rewrites and edits have one guiding principle in mind, attracting the votes needed for passage. committee chairmen have to do exactly

news. i'm told reliably that senator harry reid will move a bill starting tonight and it would have background checks in the base component of it, which means it won't be offered as an amendment. in addition to this, harry reid is going to do the assault weapons ban and the second is the ban on high-capacity magazines. you saw weapons ban faces a much more uphill battle than the one of the high capacity magazines but you have to guess at this moment and anything that passes the senate would then have to go over to the house and we're not sure what john boehner would do at this point in time. yesterday he indicated that he doesn't want to expend any new laws. that could trip up all of the reform. >> let me ask you, cynthia, about the politicians and passions about this. they were very hot, 90% for a better set of background checks. in fact, everything comes out with a majority. will it be brought to bear as the senate votes after easter? >> chris, i certainly hope so. i'm so glad that you are advising people to get in contact with their members of congress and members of senate. let

, senator harry reid. following two days of angry response from california senator dianne feinstein, she had been very publicly disappointed and angry harry reid was not going move her assault weapons ban to the senate floor as part of the democrats gun reform package. after two days of defiant reaction from senator dianne feinstein and supporters of gun reform and vice president biden made an appearance with mayor michael bloomberg demanding the assault weapons ban gets a vote and neither he or the president will rest until these measures are pursued, tonight, senator harry reid responded saying i will ensure a ban on assault weapons and limits on high capacity magazines receive votes. he also announced he would start the process of moving gun reform legislation to the floor of the senate as of tonight. the exact contours of the bill are still uncertain, including the question of what's going to end up in the base bill and acted on in the form of amendments and when the actual voting will begin given he started the process tonight. the statement from harry reid tonight was very clear on one

senate majority leader harry reid drew attention to budget cuts and how they could impact military training like that taking place at hawthorne. >> it's just not appropriate, mr. president, that our military can't train and do the maintenance necessary. these men and women, our marines were training there in hawthorne and with the sequester it's going to cut the stuff back. >> some marine officials chafed at reid's commence. his spokesman clarified his remarks saying the idea of senator reid thinks that the hawthorne tragedy has anything to do with the sequester is absurd, shepard. >> shepard: jennifer griffin at the pentagon now. the horrible plot at the university of central florida in orlando. tonight, it is very clear the plan was for another virginia tech. murder on a scale that would forever change one of the biggest universities in america. you see, the student behind the foiled murder rampage wrote a checklist. and the last line "give them hell." just one of the many new details that police revealed today. there is a video from a camera that one officer had mounted on his u

. >> shepard: the majority leader harry reid says the senate will include expanded background checks for almost all gun sales. he says the assault weapons ban does not have enough votes to pass. lots of republicans oppose the ban and background checks saying they will punish only law abiding gun owners. new york state is changing its new assault weapons ban before it even takes effect. that law bans magazines that hold more than seven rounds of ammunition. the problem is seven round magazines don't exist. starting next month you will still be able to buy 10 round magazines in new york state. it will be illegal to load more than seven rounds at a time. no word on how they will enforce that hours ago in the ancient and holy stipulate of jerusalem president obama stood before the israeli people and made a strong and direct peace. he called for two state solution. told the israelis to put themselves in the palestinians who want to land a call of their own. he says if the israelis want peace they must not only demand of their politicians but work towards it themselves. the president spoke after a tr

of senators that suddenly don't want this bill. harry reid, 228 companies in his state. then his lieutenant senator dick durbin. what i find appalling, maybe if they read the bill they shoved the bill and said to vote for it. slid after the bill is passed and people do look at it, suddenly these rich corporations it's the idea that these special interests now get a special deal and the whole idea where everyone paid and shared the cost. >> obviously all republicans opposed obamacare anyway. a lot of the democrats did say they didn't like it back during the debate. >> greta: but they voted for it? >> republicans filibustered the bill so it required 60 votes to pass the senate. there were 60 democrats in a senate for a brief period of time in 2009 and 2010. that is when they passed it. they needed all of the votes. the senators had to swallow any problems or reservations they had go ahead and vote for obamacare and try to fix it later. it went into effect january 1st. as late as last december they were trying in some way to delay its going into effect. that didn't work. now it is here. there
but a majority of the u.s. senate does not. harry reid taking the ban out of the senate gun control bill. still, joe the plumber is raffling off his ar 15. why are you raffling off the gun? >> i want to encourage americans to stand firm in the face of political correctness because that is the battle coming all about control and kind of like the previous guests about the nanny state. it is not to infringe upon our right because some strange lunatic decided to kill people. you don't sit there and take the rights from americans. and these guys barack obama has taken a page from rahm emanuel's book to take advantage of a crisis to try to disarm citizens. i have been a gun owner my life. i take the kids out hunting and we practice. my family feels secure. and as far as the ban on a 30 round clip. there is not enough rounds out there to protect my family and for him to sit there and say something like that just it makes me angry. how much is too much to protect my family? up that weapon. hold up the weapon you have there in your house. hold it up. no you what do you use that for? >> an ar 15 colt wit
, it's something i'm curious about. you know harry reid pretty well. comes from your state. how much longer do you think he's going to stick around as the majority leader in the senate? >> hasn't indicated to me one way or another. my opinion of harry, he's going to stick around as long as the electorate wil keep him there. he already indicated he wants to run in the next election a couple years from now. harry is a fighter. that's just his nature. he enjoys what he's doing. >> could you also quickly weigh in on the fight going on in new jersey? the lawsuit against new jersey trying to legalize sports betting and join nevada in that ranks. what do you think? >> well, of course, we in nevada prefer monopolies when we're the beneficiaries of monopolies. >> we all do. we all do. >> i think the nfl and ncaa would agree with you. >> yes. that's, of course, whbeen one o the limitations we have to experience by having sports betting, mayor sports franchises and ncaa tournaments stay away from us because of sports betting. new jersey would have that if they were successful in obtaining sport
party in the senate. and harry reid to push the administration look what we did on iraq and interrogation techniques gone back to the bush administration. the democrats senators have given the president a pass. the house cannot give him a pass. are you going to push for speaker boehner for subpoenas. >> i think that speaker boehner, i will urge him for the power of the house, not to chase rabbits, but to get to the bottom line. we have not heard from the people who went through this debacle on the ground. if this had been a good news story we would have heard from them the next day. the fact we haven't heard from them for six months should make every american worried about what this administration is covering up. >> coming up, do you have a savings account in the bank? is there any chance the government will skim some of your savings? should you be worried? that's next and in two minutes, a mother of a girl scout gets in trouble for selling cookies. what's the cookie controversy? that's two minutes away. all r problem... ok. not in my house! ha ha ha! ha ha ha! no no no!
gets back next month after a two-week recess on. gun control, senate majority leader harry reid is demanding any bill passes the senate must include universal background checks. that come after announcing a ban on assault weapons would be stripped from the bill because there's not enough support and it might doom the whole measure. meanwhile, there is plenty of bipartisan support for immigration reform. however, there is still no bill. april ryan is the white house correspondent. and chris is a democratic strategist. good to see both of you. gun control sure to be the most contentious issue. universal gun checks, increased penalty for purchase and grants for school safety. why cannot we get a ban on assault weapons? why cannot we get a ban on high capacity ammunition clips and poll after poll shows the lion's share of folk in this country want that of. >> we are a nation of convicted people. many of us have our beliefs and passions on one side or the other. you have to remember that the nra and also those assault weapons manufacturers are very, very, very strong lobby. that is o
and it will probably be defeated. feinstein told politico to ask harry reid why the decision was made. >>> tomorrow colorado's governor is expected to sign tough new gun legislation, including expanded background checks and limits on ammunition clips. meantime, on the immigration front, republican senator rand paul is endorsing a path to citizenship. in a speech this morning he said, quote, if you wish to live and work in america, then we will find a place for you. >>> the producers of the mini series "the bible" are pushing back after countless comparisons are being made between the actor who plays satan in that mini series and president obama. producer mark brunette calls it utter nonsense and says the actor who plays satan played similar characters years before the president was elected. >>> hollywood is coming to the hill. well, harrison ford at least. the actor and pilot will speak at the house general aviation caucus to bring attention to aviation issues. >>> if you read only one thing this morning, speaking of aviation since i'm just back from rome and acutely sensitive to jet lag and the be
that gives funding for school security. do you think harry reid made a good move? >> well, it's disappointing. but he's done the calculus and knows that an assault weapon bill will not pass the senate. sadly, i think he also knows that even in the democratically controlled senate, a background check for criminals, a universal background check for all of gun sales, including for criminals will not pass the senate. and it was certainly not going to pass the house. so that's what we're up against. and just so everyone is clear about this, you know, i'm a law-abiding gun owner. i own firearms, i go to a gun store where they run a background check. but it's perfectly legal in 33 states to buy guns from private dealers without a background check. so law-abiding gun owners go to gun stores, criminals go to private gun dealers legally and buy 1,000 weapons a day. it's amazing to me that our members of congress cannot find their backbone enough to require a criminal background check for criminals. >> well, senator feinstein and obviously the assault weapons ban was really what she was pushing hardest.
